Best Music Blogs: Fusion 45

Every week, we will be profiling the best music blogs on the Internet. But instead of writing a simple blog review, we've decided to give the blog creators the opportunity to tell you a little about themselves...

Background: I started Fusion 45 in December 2006 because I wanted to spend more time with my record collection. I'd built a recording studio in my barn and figured I should listen to them or get rid of them. Having done 28 days at Hazelden for music addiction, I'd have sooner given up air than my record collection so I locked myself away in The Buddha Barn, fired up some incense and started reliving my radio days.

The earliest posts were podcasts I put together by chance: I'd close my eyes, pick 12 records off the shelf and roll a pair of dice to see what I would play. The first roll determined the album, the second determined the cut. I'd play 12 records at 33 RPM (hence the name Fusion 45). It yielded some interesting results, not the least of which was an hour of Rod Stewart alternating with German drinking songs. I keep coming up with new ideas so the random podcasts don't happen as often.

Coolest Experience: Having someone visit the site other than my 81-year old Mom ('cuz a mother's love can take you only so far).

-Being added to my first blogroll (on AM Then FM).

-Getting a comment.

-Breaking 1,000 visitors a month (just a few months ago).

-Being asked to write for WNEW.

Craziest Feedback: Several months ago, I did a mix entitled "Richard Harris Is A God To Me". For some reason, it has generated a record amount of spam from Viagra hawkers as well as those who spam me in Russian. Go figure.

Worst Decision: Posting music in zip files rather than MP3. I spent hours fixing that one. And the whole Rod Stewart fiasco still lurks in the night.

The Future: I have a list of 50 different music related things I'd like to do: books to write, compilations to produce, string parts to arrange, movies to score. Maybe they'll all come true. In the meantime, the next few months of Fusion 45 will see more reviews, more Great Session Players, some more nuggets from Sal's Boutique and, quite possibly, another post with "Richard Harris" and "God" in the title.
