The WNEW Interview: Mike Gordon at Mile High Festival
I was a little late to the party when it came to the Grateful Dead – I became hip to them in 1991 when my freshman college roommate had their greatest hits CD on repeat. However, I was there when Phish first hit the scene... and I’ve been a fan ever since. After over a year of self-imposed hibernation writing songs for his new solo debut The Green Sparrow, Mike Gordon is finally ready to release it August 5th. I spent some quality time with Mike just after his performance at the Mile High Music Festival to get all the info about the album. . . and yes, to ask about a Phish reunion.
Here's Part 1 of our interview:
And here's the full streaming track Andelman's Yard from The Green Sparrow.
Sitting under the relative coolness of the Bison Tent Stage, there are whispers of guests appearing during his set as his album has collaborations with Phish band mates Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell, Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), and Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones) just to name a few. Mike tells me how he chose the final line-up for the album:
As I watched Mike take center stage and play his new music to the grinning, slowly swaying masses I wondered if this was just a one-time project or if he truly wanted a future with this band:
Every Phish fan has been waiting for a glimpse of a reunion - some sign of hope that it will actually happen. We hoped they would all play together when they were honored at the final Jammy Awards this year. We stared in disbelief when Trey & Fishman hit the stage at Rothbury during Mike Gordon’s set to belt out the Beatles She Said She Said. Where was Page? What the hell? The burning question - will Phish ever fully reunite? Here’s Mike's take:
The Green Sparrow hits stores August 5th. The band is out on tour right now delivering the goods – go check the schedule, read his dream blog, learn some knowledge in the Cactoids section, and even play see-saw with Mike and an oversized owl.
More Mile High coverage is coming. . .
