Live in the WNEW.com Studio: Chris Barron of Spin Doctors
So I had just gotten my drivers license when my friend Todd had asked me to drive him and a few of our friends to a free Spin Doctors concert in Montclair, New Jersey. I had heard the songs that MTV had made famous from their Pocket Full Of Kryptonite album and was curious to see them live. What I saw that day was not at all what I expected – I thought I would see a pop band doing their quick cuts with little or no improvisation. What I got was something different, a funky jam band that took the structure of pop and manipulated it into something different. Now, years later – the Spin Doctors don’t really do too many gigs these day, but they are still alive and well, and WNEW (in a way) is responsible for them getting back together after a long breakup . I’ll let lead singer Chris Barron explain:
But there also was a time when we all thought that Chris would not be able to sing altogether. Around 1999 while he was on tour supporting the Spin Doctor’s album Here Comes The Bride, Chris lost his voice due to a rare form of vocal chord paralysis that severely affected his ability to talk and sing as he explains:
Here’s a tongue-in-cheek version Chris played for us of one of the biggest hits that the Spin Doctors had. This is Two Princes:
So now Chris has his new solo album for us, called Pancho & The Kid. The title is based on a partnership that he made with a musician friend of his and the who thing was birthed out of being asked to write a song for children's movie. Here’s the story of how it all came about, listen up:
Here’s one of the fruits of their collaboration, off the Pancho & The Kid album – this is the very soulful Brokenhearted Serenade. Listen up:
And if that wasn’t enough for you, you might also want to check this one out as well. Here’s the hauntingly beautiful Can’t Kick The Habit.
