A.M. Nuggets: A New Holiday Classic: Wormburner's Bells of St. Ignatius
There's a great rock band on the rise here in New York City and they're called Wormburner. And though their name evokes images of kids scorching nightcrawlers with a magnifying glass, the band instead got the name from golf slang (certainly the toughest of all the sporting lingos), a "wormburner" being a long, low shot that achieves yardage while barely clearing the grass.
On stage at the Mercury Lounge last Friday this five-piece ran through songs off their excellent 2006 release A Hero's Welcome, as well as a handful of new songs. One song stood out above all the rest though - the set closing Bells of St. Ignatius. This is an original Christmas song, the kind nobody bothers to write anymore. It's a rocker, best enjoyed at the bar with pint in hand, and it breaks through the glut of 'traditional' holiday tunes, most of which have overplayed to the point of sounding like elevator music. Take a listen:
Wormburner's next show is at the Bowery Ballroom on January 10, 2009, where they'll open for Camper Van Beethoven. Click here for ticket info, and check WNEW.com after the holidays when we'll be giving away tix to this show.
