I first came across Blitzen Trapper when they did a session on Daytrotter.com a while back. I was very impressed with their sound – it was a combination of southern rock and blues, reminiscent of Lynyrd Skynyrd or The Black Crowes. It seemed like right after I discovered them (and their Wild Mountain Nation album) they were getting ready to release their new album Furr on Sub Pop. The guys were doing a show at the Bowery Ballroom and stopped by to give us a taste of the album. In creating Furr, there were no big changes to their writing process – it all seems to come naturally, and in an extremely short amount of time. About 10 minutes to be exact.

There were many differences in recording Wild Mountain Nation and Furr. Wild Mountain Nation explored a variety of styles and sounds, where it seems that with Furr, they honed their craft into something even more powerful. One of the most interesting differences between albums involved a 100 year old piano in the studio.

It turns out that there was a lot of extra material for Furr, and the process to whittle it down to the final tracks was not too difficult. Everyone got to weigh in on whether or not they thought the tracks were worthy. “We took a census” Eric says with a smile. Picking Furr as the title track of the album apparently came from one such census meeting.
