Another year, another outstanding Mountain Jam weekend at the beautiful Hunter Mountain in New York's Catskills region. WNEW was on the scene and witnessed friendly vibes and incredible performances from the likes of Gov't Mule, Coheed & Cambria, Michael Franti & Spearhead, headliners the Allman Brothers Band as well as some late-night heat from Girl Talk and Pimps of Joytime. Sit back and enjoy some photos, and tune in tomorrow for our interviews with Bill Kreutzmann, Michael Franti, Derek Trucks and Richie Havens.
If you're planning to be home this weekend, do yourself a favor and check out the fifth annual Mountain Jam festival as it is webcast live from Hunter, NY all weekend long. Starting tomorrow evening you can catch Gov't Mule, Umphrey's McGee, Derek Trucks Band, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Pimps of Joytime, Girl Talk and of course the Allman Brothers doing their thing high on the mountain top in the Catskills.
The event is a pay-per-view broadcast on iClips, who have been doing a ridiculous job with the festival webcasts this year. I watched Summercamp live all last weekend and the quality was outstanding.
To get you started I've got some FREE PPV codes to give away - these will allow you to watch the whole thing for free all weekend. Leave a comment below - tell me who you would be most excited to see at Mountain Jam (lineup here - and we'll hit you back with the free code (while supplies last).
We've reached a milestone here at WNEW.com - our 1000th post. In a little under nine months, since our launch in April 2008, we've brought you a thousand posts on all things rock 'n roll, old and new, and other stuff we felt like posting. By way of a look back, here are some of our favorite things from the first 1000 posts:
Rock commentary of the highest order from our outstanding roster of writers: J.A. Bartlett, Alex Young, Fusion 45, Bill Melville, Paul Rhodes, Kevin Phillips, Chris Clancy, our hardworking Archivist, big winner Mari S. (go Cards!) and the rest of the many awesome contributors we've had so far.
There have been a lot of great moments captured in these first 1000 posts - here's a look at the posts you've clicked on the most:
Thank you kind reader for hanging in there with us throughout our early days. We've had a great time bringing you these posts and we've particularly enjoyed the conversations (and controversies - sorry Cure fans!) that have resulted. We hope you'll still be with us when we hit our 10,000th post - this time I promise I'll bring cake.
Optimism is never in short supply when it comes to Michael Franti. You might expect some degree of fatigue from a man who's spent the better part of this decade railing against the violence and injustices of the world, but he displays no hint of it. On stage and in private he radiates positivity - disarming people with a smile while staying laser focused on the issues of the day. I sat down with Franti recently to talk about the new Spearhead album All Rebel Rockers, and to get his take on the state of things as we enter into the Age of Obama.
Like you might expect, Franti is a big Obama fan and feels deeply that we've turned a corner in this country. As we began the interview I asked him what this election meant to him - here's what he had to say:
Electing the first African American president won't be an immediate remedy to this country's problems, says Franti, and Obama is going to need help:
Read on for the rest of our interview, including Franti's love for Warren Haynes ("...that stringy-haired white southern rocker"). And check out this photo gallery of Michael Franti & Spearhead at the Nokia Theater Times Square (11-21-08).
Tonight marks the rocking start to the holiday season with the return of Warren Haynes' famed Christmas Jam. Celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year, it's the event Warren says is nearest and dearest to his heart. "Everyone gives their time," he said, "no one's travel is paid, everyone just shows up and plays." The full weekend of activity in Asheville, NC is designed to delight rock fans who fly in from all over the world, and raises money for Habitat for Humanity. Starring at the jam this year is Ben Harper with his new outfit RELENTLESS7, tonight's headliner the Allman Brothers Band, Michael Franti doing an acoustic set with guitarist Jay Bowman, special guest John Paul Jones, and of course Gov't Mule. Alas there's no webcast so those of us who can't attend will keep an eye on the torrents and await word from what is sure to be a ridiculous shred-fest of a weekend.
"Temple of the Mule" is the name of Gov't Mule's run of New Year's show this year, a nod to the origins of the Angel Orensanz Center where Mule will play on 12/27 and 12/28. Though these shows are sold out, a limited number of tickets are being released Wednesday at noon. Good luck...
You can try your luck for the New Year's Eve show by entering our giveaway. And if you like Gov't Mule then you might like our Warren Haynes studio session. A little Soulshine can sure take the edge off a cold Tuesday morning.
What else is going on? How about celebrating New Year's Eve for free? We've got tickets to a sick party in PA at the Silo (New Riders of the Purple Sage, Donna Jean & Tricksters), and to the big BIG Gov't Mule show at the Hammerstein. Enter to win and celebrate New Year's Eve on us.
James Brown was the 'Hardest Working Man in Showbiz', a title he rightly deserved, but without a doubt the hardest working man in rock 'n roll is Warren Haynes. The man we first met as the 'new guy' in the Allman Brothers Band twenty years ago has grown into a frontman extraordinaire, equal parts bandleader and scene-maker.
The man also known as the Mayor of Bonnaroo stopped by our studios last week for an incredible acoustic session and interview. Hear the entire show right now by clicking play below.
Warren Haynes Studio Session - Full Show
Warren talked to our own Evan Levy about all things Gov't Mule and Allman Brothers, and went into detail about how he puts together the yearly Christmas Jam shows in his hometown of Asheville, NC. He also talked about attending the Led Zeppelin reunion show this year ("made us feel like we were in high school again"). We were also excited to hear about big plans being laid for next year's 40th anniversary of the Allman Brothers. And yes, that includes the return of the legendary Beacon Theater run (sounds like it's set for March). Warren reckons he's played the Beacon over 170 times, far more than any other venue.
As incredible as it was to talk to Warren Haynes in person, all was forgotten the minute he picked up his guitar and started to sing. Without warning he launched into two of the most achingly beautiful songs you'll ever hear: Beautifully Broken and Soulshine. Both are available below for your listening pleasure. And click through to see more photos from a banner day at WNEW.com studios.
Beautifully Broken
Soulshine
We hope you'll join us this New Year's Eve to see Gov't Mule tear down 2008 at the Hammerstein Ballroom. We're giving away tickets here - go enter to win.
It seems like with each passing week we get another major addition to the lineup for the 20th annual Christmas Jam in Asheville, NC (Dec. 12-13). Hosted by Warren Haynes this two-night behemoth already boasts the Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule, Michael Franti , Derek Trucks Band and Coheed & Cambria, and last week they announced special guest John Paul Jones. Now Ben Harper has joined on for the second night. The weekend isn't just about the big arena shows - there's also Christmas Jam By Day in downtown Ashville which includes a Comedy Jam, film festival, and afternoon shows featuring some bigs names at small venues. Col. Bruce Hampton, Ivan Neville, U-Melt and the Lee Boys will each play mid-day sets. This thing's starting to look more and more like the Jazzfest...
Our good friend Andrew, from our cousin station 94.7 The Globe in D.C., took in the sights and sounds of the All Good Festival a couple weeks ago and sent in some thoughts and photos from the scene:
The 12th AnnualAll Good Festivalin Masontown, WV once again provided a haven to the ultra diehard jam band crowd. In the day & age of the super-festival All Good has continued to keep true to its roots with a jam band heavy line-up featuring the likes of Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh & Friends, Gov’t Mule, Medeski, Scofield, Martin, & Wood, and Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi among many others.
The festival kicked off Thursday night with the Brazilian Girls bringing their suave avant-garde wackiness to greet the early arrivers. Their bizarre stage antics and overall circus type allure proved to be a perfect fit for theAll Goodcrowd.
