Welcome to WNEW.com
WNEW.com is a channel and website created by and for people who are passionate about rock. Unlike most radio stations, who limit themselves to one style or vintage (e.g., alternative, hard rock, soft rock, classic rock), WNEW.com will reflect the broad tastes of listeners who enjoy a wider spectrum of music.
Perhaps the most unique aspect of WNEW.com is our incredible audio archives, featuring historic concerts and live performances from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, as well as timeless interviews with a remarkable roster of rock immortals. We’ve gathered and digitized hundreds of amazing moments from the airwaves of some of America’s great rock radio stations, most notably our namesake WNEW-FM, which ruled the airwaves in New York City for four decades. On-air visits were commonplace by members of the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zeppelin, the Who, the Dead and virtually every superstar you could imagine.
Our primary goals are to be an extraordinary rock outpost and to be extremely relevant to you. We want to recapture the spirit and philosophy of progressive rock through WNEW.com and connect the dots to rock's most compelling artists of the present and future.
Please help guide us with your input as we get to know each other better.
Norm Winer, program director, and the staff of WNEW.com
Listener Quotes
"Oh man, I think I died and went to heaven. When I saw the blurb in today's NY Times, 'WNEW Returns' I almost couldn't believe my eyes. WNEW-FM was without a doubt the greatest radio station that ever existed. I spent the early part of my career working the graveyard shift so my fondest memories were of Alison Steele, Tom Morera, Richard Neer, Pete Larkin et al helping me make it through the night. I'm presently living in the radio wasteland of Phoenix, AZ and am surviving on satellite radio. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" -Thomas Michael Dooley
"This is the highlight of Tax Day for me! Memories floating back of listening to the Professor, the Nightbird and all the other jocks at WNEW-FM... my 13 year-old daughter is enthralled with the Beatles and to play Scott-so's interview with McCartney for her today was a treat for both of us! Thanks so much for bringing back this much-valued piece of the past..." -Steve M.
"I was a radio-under-the-pillow kid late at night... growing up in Brooklyn. Listened to WNEW-AM... and had dreams about being on the air there some day. I became your first morning DJ in 1968. Seeing these call letters back is like finding a missing page from a family history book. 'The Professor' is gone. But "Hi" to Jon, and Rosko and Zach and the rest of the guys. It has been a long time coming... back." -Dick Summer
"Wow -- WNEW-FM is reincarnated? Rock lives again?!? Pinch me, I must be dreaming!" -MasonR
"Glad to hear WNEW-FM is back in some sort of way. It should have never been removed from 102.7 NYC. Too much History was left to be made, but now perhaps it can on HD2. Scott Muni is looking down today." -Victor Monachelli
"I listened to WNEW-FM at the beginning and know Norm Winer from his stint as program director at XRT in Chicago where I have lived for the last 25 years. Matching them was a stroke of genius." -George Crystal
"My husband and I were looking for info on HD radios and just happened to see a link for WNEW coming back. We couldn't imagine that would happen, it was only the best station in the country for both of us growing up. We are so excited and started reminiscing about the DJ's, some of who are on WFUV at Fordham University (which we also listen to for obvious reasons). Thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I hope I'm able to listen at work and it's not blocked. Good luck guys and pleaseeeeee continue!" -Marilyn & Larry Unick
"Thank you, and keep on rocking." -Erwin
"Wow this is great. This was my station for many years. Always the place to hear the latest from Lennon and the other Fabs. Ian and the Tull boys. The Led Zeppers. Bruce and E-Street. Bobby Dylan and the Dead. I've added it to my favorites and will be here often." -Tom Greff
"The first 30 years of my life were spent in the NY metro area. I grew up a WNEW-FM fan. I remember Dave Herman in the mornings, Scott Muni doing those 'British Things...Things from England' every Friday afternoon, as I was driving home from college on Long Island. Dennis Elsas (my fellow ELO Fan)... Pete Fornatale... Alison Steele... and those crazy stories from Vin Scelsa, Tom Morerra and Meg(less) Griffin (the Ramones FIRST fan). They were all my heroes. THEY were the reasons I got behind a microphone and have been in broadcasting for over 25 years. OH YEAH, then there was music, too. The best rock station in America because it never sounded like a 'format.' It was great rock music from may eras. You could tune in and hear them playing Chuck Berry, then the Ramones, the Who and more (but never... NEVER... disco). I remember winning only one contest on a radio station in my lifetime. And it was from WNEW-FM: I won tickets to see MOTT THE HOOPLE on Broadway at the Uris Theater, Plus all 3 MOTT albums. Opening act? QUEEN on their first US tour (talk about MEMORIES?). It was a night I'll never forget. So now, here I am 200 miles away from NY city, 30 years later, but through technology, I get to be 22 again, if only when I'm streaming! Thank you for bringing back WNEW-FM. I love your interview 'flashbacks.' You guys are doing it right! I'll be listening whenever I'm able. P.S. ROCK(still) LIVES" -JC Haze
"Great radio is back! We love it!" -Dan in Orlando
"It is just phenomenal that, we can go back and re-live many great moments from the old WNEW-FM. The interviews, the live concerts, and of course the fantastic music. I also won a couple of things from this great station. Tickets to see The Grateful Dead in 1994, but the best was a trip to New Orleans, that Scott Muni himself, picked my name. Bless you guys for making this available. It brings back the greatest of memories!!" -Bob
"When I saw an article in the NY Times about the return (sort of) of WNEW O was very skeptical. For me WNEW was THE station for me growing up in the metro area. Well so far it's eerily like the old format. I started listening in 1970 and remember hearing The Allman Brothers 2nd album being previewed and they've been my favorite band since. I remember John Lennon stopping by one afternoon to chat with Scott Muni. I remember Pete Fornatelle playing the new Poco album Crazy Eyes. I could fill a book with memories of this station and people who listened back then know what I mean. I'm on my second day of listening on my computer and it is refreshing to hear radio and not think it sucks. Welcome back, it's been too long." -Paul Horvath
"Well, it's about time. I started listening about '71. I remember when ELP came to visit the late, great Scott Muni, the late nights with Alison Steele, Vince Scelsa and his Idiots Delight, and also (believe it or not) the Alan Watts lectures during the early AM Sunday mornings. My thanks and congrats." -Bob Collins
"Hey, started listening to WNEW when I was twelve, around 1994. Love the mix of music, sounds like it did then, and would have, if they kept the original idea of the station." -Chris B
